TCBAGS

I suffer from an odd disorder called This Could Be a Game Syndrome. Perhaps you can relate. I navigate through my daily routines – parenting, work, play, eating, sleeping – just like ‘normal’ people, but several times a day TCBAGS (pronounced ‘Tee-See-Bags’) strikes, and my consciousness is overtaken by an uncontrollable compulsion to translate whatever [...]

In den meisten Spielen geschieht so viel in den Spielen – aber so wenig mit den Spielern selbst.

Sarahs Kommentar nachdem sie Tale of Tales’ The Path gesehen hat. Man müsste sich diesen Satz zwischendurch wieder durchlesen, wenn man daran ist, ein Spiel zu entwerfen.

Alone Together

In a study done on player interactions within World of Warcraft, a graphics-based online multiplayer game, the results found that “solable” classes, in other words classes that required the least social interactions, were the most popular classes of characters chosen, and the overall research concluded that players within the World of [...]

Seamless

Everything we do in terms of “content” threatens the underlying core of “game” – if done correctly, everything blends seamlessly. If not, then the best art/interface/VO/story in the world cannot salvage a damaged core.

American McGee is becoming more and more my personal hero. He seems to be one of those very few game designers out [...]

On Achievements

Woven at 2009-01-21T14:53, coloured as .

After reading Michaël Samyn’s post on achievements I realised that more and more games are implementing this, though not always calling it achievements.

Games like LocoRoco or echochrome do already implement it by not going the “Oh, you died, start all over again” way. They let you keep playing, but giving you stats about how perfect [...]

Reverse Games or I Seem To Have Lost the Ability to Write Witty Titles

Thank the gods for the meta level. If you can’t say anything clever, just talk about not knowing what to say.

Anyway. So a new phase in my life started yesterday, with me taking up my studies in Game Design at the ZHdK. It promises to be quite an interesting time, with interesting people all around. [...]

We Didn’t Playtest This at All

We Didn’t Playtest This at All is so dumb that it goes around the corner and becomes kind of interesting. It’s kind of like Fluxx, only with less strategy and coherence (and if you know anything about that game, you know it’s already so devoid of strategy as to lack anything like coherence).

Play This Thing! [...]

A Turing-Test for Video Games

I was just reading Roger Caillois’ book about games when he brought up the argument that competitions (agôn) are not unlike theatre plays: according to him, they have a dramatic arch, and as such they need an audience. Obviously, that second argument has been refuted by theatre theorists quite some time ago. The competition can [...]

Pardon me. Come again?! Soll [...]

Yesterday, some friends invited me to see Bodo Wartke. If you haven’t seen him, check him out: he’s really extremely funny, very witty and totally charming. Be warned, though: You should have a pretty firm grip on the German language, otherwise you will miss 80% of his jokes …

For me most interesting to see was [...]

Basically, I got the letter already on friday. But yesterday was Polymanga, so there was no time for blogging. And I didn’t even expect it to arrive that early.

It was already 10pm on friday when my flatmate came into my room. “You’ve got mail” he said. I shrugged – “From whom?”, continuing to slay one [...]

Kulturförderung für Computerspiele

Woven at 2008-04-17T20:03, coloured as .
