Look Ma, No Zoom!

I just found an interesting article via John Gruber1 about camera lenses:

If you are like most photographers just starting out with a new 35mm SLR, chances are it came with one of those ubiquitous 28-80mm (or similar) “consumer” zooms. In the last 15 years these inexpensive lenses have all but replaced the traditional 50mm prime [...]

Octagonal

What is it with the future and octagonal sheets?

It is a stylistic device in Battlestar Galactica …

And now it re-appears in Wired’s Artifacts from the Future:

I’m all for style, but this just seems not thought through. Octagonal sheets will take at least twice as much time to be cut, and will produce quite unnecessary waste [...]

Illustrated Espresso

I‘m new to the world of fancy coffee drinks. With the vast number of ordering options and new words with accented characters to pronounce; the coffee shop ordering experience can be intimidating. I’ve created a few small illustrations to help myself and others wrap their head around some of the small differences.

Lokesh Dhakar helps you [...]

Just saw Lucky Number Slevin. And how cool can a film be – it’s just one big 70s-Style-a-Palooza! (Oh, and there’s quite a fair share of Josh Hartnett in there too. Hehe.)

Now SR DRS has to give itself a new logo too, and OMG are they creative!Look!… – and now please someone tell me why I’m all of a sudden getting so sleepy and about to doze off …Honestly…. Those designers are not even able to emulate the world-renowned Swiss Graphic Design, let alone quote it.

Noir

Woah. I just saw the latest episode of Smallville: Noir. I enjoyed the series for its oversaturated, light-blooming imagery before, but this episode beats it all: the creators prove that they can even fake a great “Film-Noir-Look”.

Yet there’s one thing …

Where’s that dark red glossy lipstick? SHARETHIS.addEntry({ title: “Noir”, url: “http://tapestry.xeophin.net/threads/2007/05/06/noir/” });

Bike Messengers as Style Icons

Today’s essential question: Is [habi][3] a style icon? ;-) “Nowadays, everybody wants to look like a messenger,” says the Brooklyn transplant, with her short red dreads poking out from under a camouflage cap.

Living in an Imperfect World

Sometimes, I really feel stupid when I start bitching around about some stupidLike said, I didn’t think I was stupid, but for a moment there I thought, maybe I am. But the fact that this has happened twice, and I have whitnessed the confusion with other passengers today, I conclude that it is the design of the station, not people’s stupidity, that has caused me to miss my train.Although initially I didn’t think the overall architecture of the station was bad, my admiration soured over time. I saw some pictures of some of the proposed alternatives, and now I always look at what was built and think of what it could have been.

OMG!

«No: what’s incredible [about The Incredibles] isn’t performance capture but another phenomenon altogether. What’s incredible about The Incredibles is the art of design capture. Because when it comes to nailing design, the “Is” have it.»
